Scientific terms are linguistic tools that standardize scientific concepts and facilitate communication within specialized fields. This article seeks to approach the issue of developing scientific terminology in modern Arabic, based on the premise that language functions both as a cognitive system and a social dimension in which terminology plays an effective scientific role. In light of the transformations brought about by the explosion of knowledge and sciences—which have led to a massive expansion in concepts and theories—terminology has emerged as an independent scientific discipline and an applied branch of linguistics.To describe the state of scientific terminology in modern Arabic, this article revisits the role of terminology in classical Arabic, which serves as a model of excellence and influence, where scientific terms were characterized by precision and craftsmanship. The article then examines modern efforts to meet the needs of users, through the revival of intrinsic linguistic mechanisms such as derivation, arabization, and borrowing, and their employment in the service of terminology development. These efforts are considered necessary, despite the challenges in term formation and the lack of standardization

المصطلحات العلمية هي أدوات لغوية تضبط مفاهيم علمية، تعمل على تسهيل التواصل داخل الحقول العلمية. يهدف هذا المقال إلى مقاربة إشكالية وضع المصطلح العلمي في العربية الحديثة، انطلاقًا من اعتبار اللغة نظاما معرفيا وبُعدا اجتماعيا، تؤدّي فيه المصطلحات دورا علميا فعّالا. ففي ظل التحولات التي فرضتها ثورة المعارف والعلوم، والتي أفرزت نموًا هائلًا في المفاهيم والنظريات، استقام المصطلح علما قائما بذاته، وفرعا تطبيقيا من فروع اللسانيات. في سبيل توصيف وضع المصطلح العلمي في العربية الحديثة، يُعرّج المقال على المصطلح العلمي في العربية التراثية، باعتبارها نموذجا للتفوق والحضور، فقد تجرّد المصطلح العلميّ فيها بدقّة ومهارة. ثم الوقوف على المحاولات الحديثة لسدّ حاجة المستعمل، ففي سبيل ذلك تم بعث آليات اللغة ومكوّناتها الذاتية من اشتقاق وتعريب واقتراض، وتوظيفها لخدمة المصطلح والنهوض به، كاختيار ضروريّ رغم ما يعتريه من تعسر في الوضع ونقص في التأمين.

Les termes scientifiques sont des instruments linguistiques qui encadrent les concepts scientifiques et facilitent la communication au sein des disciplines spécialisées. Cet article vise à aborder la problématique de l’élaboration de la terminologie scientifique en arabe moderne, en considérant la langue comme un système cognitif et une dimension sociale où la terminologie joue un rôle scientifique essentiel. À l’ère des bouleversements induits par la révolution des savoirs et des sciences — qui a engendré une croissance considérable des concepts et des théories — la terminologie s’est constituée en tant que discipline autonome et branche appliquée de la linguistique.Pour décrire l’état de la terminologie scientifique en arabe moderne, l’article revient d’abord sur la terminologie dans l’arabe classique, considérée comme un modèle d’excellence et de rayonnement, où les termes scientifiques se distinguaient par leur précision et leur maîtrise. Ensuite, il s’attarde sur les tentatives contemporaines visant à répondre aux besoins des usagers, en mobilisant les mécanismes linguistiques internes tels que la dérivation, l’arabisation et l’emprunt, afin de servir et promouvoir la terminologie, et ce malgré les difficultés inhérentes à sa mise en place et l’insuffisance de sa normalisation.
