Edward Said’s ”Orientalism”, Acceptance and controversy, A critical reading

There have been many critical studies on the book “Orientalism”, and most of them were praising the work of the critic “Edward Said” and the elevation of its literary and intellectual value, given the qualitative leap that this book brought about in different fields of research and study. In contrast, many negative criticisms, responses and interpretations opposed his ideas and sought to dwarf the book and degrade its intellectual and cultural value by refuting his proposals, where every critic in his proposition is based on methodological, ideological, and epistemological backgrounds. Therefore, this article seeks to highlight some of the most important views that criticized Edward Said and his book “Orientalism”, whether favorable or unfavorable. It intends to be a fairly accurate reading and fairly faithful to the thought of E Said. The method is based on the presentation of data according to a dialectical approach that works by presenting a view, criticizing it, and then responding to it as objectively as possible.

لقد كثرت الدراسات النقدية حول كتاب «الاستشراق» وأغلبها كان بالمدح والإشادة والتنويه بصنيع الناقد «إدوارد سعيد» والإعلاء من قيمته الأدبية والفكرية، نظرا لما أحدثه هذا الكتاب من نقلة نوعية في ميادين مختلفة من البحث والدراسة، وعلى النقيض من هذا فلقد كانت ولا تزال العديد من النقود السلبية والردود والتأويلات المعارضة لأفكاره التي سعت إلى تقزيم الكتاب والحط من قيمته الفكرية والثقافية عن طريق تفنيد طروحاته والرد عليها، وكل ناقد في طرحه هذا يستند إلى خلفيات منهجية، إديولوجية، معرفية...وعليه فإننا نتغيا من مقالنا هذا تسليط الضوء على بعض أهم الآراء التي سعت إلى توجيه النقد إلى «إدوارد سعيد» وكتابه «الاستشراق» بالمدح والقدح، أي عرض بعض الآراء والمواقف المؤيدة والمعارضة له بتقديم قراءة نقدية حول « إدوارد سعيد» وكتابه «الاستشراق» .ولقد كانت منهجيتنا في هذا الطرح هي عملية عرض البيانات وفق منهج جدلي يعمل على تقديم الرأي ثم نقده والرد عليه.

Des études critiques se sont multipliées autour du livre « l’Orientalisme », dont la plupart visaient à louer le travail du critique Edward Saïd et à exalter sa valeur littéraire et intellectuelle, en raison de la valeur du livre dans divers domaines de recherche et de pensées. Ceci dit, beaucoup de ce qui a été souvent dit n’est que des critiques négatives, de commentaires inexacts et des interprétations farfelues… dans l’absolu, toute critique dans sa proposition est basée sur des arrière-plans méthodologiques, idéologiques, cognitifs … Par conséquent, nous souhaitons que cet article souligne certains des points de vue les plus importants ayant critiqué Edward Saïd et son livre Orientalisme, que cela soit des louanges favorables ou des calomnies défavorables. Notre article se veut une lecture assez exacte et assez fidèle à la pensée d’E Saïd, et notre méthode dans cette présentation se base sur la présentation des données selon une approche dialectique qui fonctionne en présentant une thèse, puis en la critiquant et en y répondant le plus objectivement possible.
