The character of the lizard and its act of resurrection in the Kabyle tale: a reading in light of Philippe Hamon

Abstract

English

This research is part of the literary study of Kabyle folk tales from a semiotic perspective, where it considers resurrection as an element of analysis. The act of resurrection performed by the lizard character is examined here in order to determine its importance within the narrative program of the two stories analysed and to identify the meanings it conveys. The main objective is to reveal the narrative, symbolic, and cultural values associated with the lizard character. To achieve this, the theoretical framework adopted is Philippe Hamon’s narrative semiotics, centered on the analysis of characters. The methodology developed is based on the application of this semiotic approach to the act of resurrection carried out by the lizard. The results clearly show that this lizard character assumes a strong narrative function, being a very active character that fulfills various thematic roles. It also bears a strong symbolic charge, present across several semantic axes. يندرج هذا البحث ضمن الدراسة الادبية للحكايات الشعبية القبائلية من منظور سيميائي، حيث يتناول فعل الاحياء بوصفه عنصرا من عناصر التحليل. و يتم هنا فحص فعل الاحياء الذي تقوم به شخصية السحلية، من اجل معرفة اهميته داخل البرنامج السردي للحكايتين اللاتي تظهر فيهما شخصية السحلية، و تجديد الدلالات التي تنقلها. يتمثل الهدف الرئيسي في الكشف عن القيم السردية و الرمزية و الثقافية المرتبطة بشخصية السحلية. و لتحقيق ذلك، تم اعتماد الاطار النظري للسيميائيات السردية عند فليب هامون، المرتكز على تحليل الشخصيات. و تعتمد المنهجية المتبعة على تطبيق هذه المقاربة السيميائية على فعل الاحياء الذي تقوم به السحلية. و تظهر النتائج بوضوح ان شخصية السحلية تؤدي وظيفة سردية قوية، اذ تعد شخصية نشطة جدا تؤدي ادوارا موضوعاتية متعددة. كما تحمل شحنة رمزية قوية، تتجلى عبر عدة محاور دلالية، و تشير كذلك الى المعتقدات، و الخيال الجماعي، و التعبير عن واقع اجتماعي ينقل عبر السرد.

Cette recherche s’inscrit dans le cadre de l’étude littéraire des contes populaires kabyles d’un point de vue sémiotique ; elle prend comme élément d’analyse, l’action de résurrection réalisée par le personnage du lézard. La problématique examinée ici est de savoir quelle est l’importance de cette action de résurrection dans le programme narratif des deux récits analysés et quelles sont les significations qu’elle véhicule ? L’objectif principal est de révéler les valeurs narratives, symboliques et culturelles associées au personnage du lézard. Pour cela, on a mobilisé le cadre théorique qui repose sur la sémiotique narrative de Philippe Hamon, centrée sur l’analyse des personnages. La méthodologie adoptée s’appuie sur l’application de cette approche sémiotique sur l’action de résurrection réalisée par le lézard. Les résultats mettent en évidence que ce personnage du lézard incarne une forte charge narrative étant un personnage très actif, représentant divers rôles thématique, et qui se présente aussi sur plusieurs axes actantiels. Il incarne également une forte charge symbolique liée aux croyances, à l’imaginaire collectif et à l’expression d’une réalité sociale transmise par le récit.
